ASF Accredited healthcare facility is defined as a health facility with good infrastructure, adequate staff, adequate medicine and supplies, good administrative processes, and sufficient adequate bulk supplies. It uses applicable clinical policies, protocols and guidelines, and it harnesses partner and stakeholder support. ASF Accredited healthcare facility also collaborates with government facilities/departments, the private sector and non-governmental organisations to address the social determinants of health.
ASF Accredited healthcare facility standard is used to determine the status of accredited facility. The ASF Standard comprised of more than 200 elements, categorized into 12 components. These components include:
- Patient and Family Rights
- Access and Continuity of Care
- Patient Assessment
- Patient Care
- Clinical Safety and Infection Control
- Environmental Safety
- Support Services and Infrastructure
- Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
- Medical Records and Health Information Management
- Human Resources for Health
- Administration, management and Leadership
- Medical Staff & Nursing Services
Each element on the ASF Standard is weighted as vital, essential or important and scored as green (achieved), amber (partially achieved) or red (not achieved). The average score according to the weights assigned to more than 200 elements determines whether a health facility has qualified for one of the four ASF Accredited healthcare facility categories; silver, gold, platinum or diamond. An ASF Accredited healthcare facility status is achieved when a facility obtained one of these categories. Note that a facility can obtain a high average score example 80% but not qualify for an ASF Accredited healthcare facility category because the minimum percentages according to the weight categories were not obtained. For further details on the percentages per weight category required to achieve one of the four categories, see the ASF Accredited healthcare facility Definition and Components chapter. ASF Accredited healthcare facility manual was developed to assist healthcare facilities to achieve ASF Accredited healthcare facility status. The manual describes step-by-step how the health facility should go about to achieve every elements on the ASF Standard.
