A Global Initiative — Version 2 (Final), September 2026
Why ASF Tourism
A guest dies of carbon monoxide poisoning. A guest is scalded in a shower. A guest is electrocuted in a bathroom. None of these are rare, none are confined to one country or one continent — and almost nobody, anywhere, is independently checking for any of them.

The gap, stated plainly
Over 200 tourism certification schemes exist worldwide. Nearly all certify the same thing: environmental and social sustainability.
Green Globe, EarthCheck, GSTC, Travelife — real organisations. None independently verify water safety, CO detectors, or staff CPR knowledge.
GSTC Hotel Standard, verbatim: “Health, safety, and security fall under the responsibility of specialized authorities and are outside the scope of the standard set.”
This isn’t theoretical

CARBON MONOXIDE
905 U.S. lodging guests poisoned 2005–2018, 22 deaths. Almost no country requires detectors by law.
SCALDING
A 72-year-old died at a Marriott-branded hotel — water at 134–136°F vs. a 120°F legal limit.
ELECTROCUTION
CPSC: ground-fault protection prevents two-thirds of home electrocutions.
FALLS
The single highest-frequency guest liability claim at hotels — $30,000–$250,000 per settlement.
COVID forced the industry to look. Then everyone looked away.
| Response | What it does | The gap it leaves |
|---|---|---|
| UN Tourism | Guidelines pointing to WHO interim guidance | Gives direction, never verifies any facility |
| WTTC | “Safe Travels” stamp, most recognised mark | Self-assessed — an operator fills in a form |
| GSTC | World’s leading sustainability standard | Explicitly declines to cover safety at all |
What never arrived: an independent body, structurally separated, verifying real evidence on-site.
Why This Is a Business Problem, Not Just a Safety One
The demand is already here, worldwide
$11.6T
global Travel & Tourism GDP, 2025
4.1%
growth — nearly double the global economy
87%
of travellers carry safety concerns
600M
sickened yearly by contaminated food (WHO)
What this means for a booking — measured, not stated:
| Choose a certified property over an uncertified one, even pricier or better-rated | 79–84% |
| Would pay more for visible, guaranteed certification | ~80% |
| Call cleanliness the single most important factor in choosing where to stay | 92% |
Five years of data (2020–2026) show this demand hardened, it didn’t fade. Full research: france-asf.fr/tourism/why
A model that already works
ASF has run this model for healthcare since 2020 — real standards, real on-site verification, real separation between who sets the standard and who decides who passes.

What ASF Tourism is not
Not a replacement
for national classification or a tour operator association’s own code. It sits alongside both.
Not another sustainability label
Over 200 of those exist. This covers the one thing almost none of them do.
Not a self-declared stamp
Real evidence, reviewed by a real person — not a form an operator fills in itself.
Not finished
No local partner confirmed anywhere yet. Honest, not oversold.
See it for yourself

A global initiative, not a regional one — currently being looked at across East Africa, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, and West Asia.
