At a glance

  • Opioids are prescribed for the lowest effective dose and the shortest effective duration.
  • Non-opioid alternatives are considered and recorded before an opioid is started.
  • A designated clinician leads stewardship, or a physician champion where no dedicated person exists.
  • Signs of diversion or misuse are monitored and reported.
  • Stop and get help straight away if: an opioid is prescribed with no review and no stewardship record, or misuse is seen and not reported.
