  • Stop and get help straight away if: a staff member has a needlestick or splash, and the source patient or the staff member’s status is unknown and no one has been told.

9. Procedure

Step 1. Give first aid.

  • Wash the area with soap and running water.
  • For eyes, irrigate with clean water or saline for 15 minutes.

Key point: Do this first, before anything else.

Step 2. Report.

  • Tell the line manager and occupational health the same day.
  • Give the time, the cause and the source, if known.

Key point: The report starts the clock for PEP.

Step 3. Get assessed.

  • Attend occupational health within the time set (usually within 2 hours for PEP).
  • Ask for the source patient to be tested, with consent, where the policy allows.

Key point: PEP is most effective when started early.

Step 4. Record and learn.

  • Enter the exposure on the incident system.
  • Review the cause at the monthly safety meeting.

Key point: Every exposure is a learning point.
